The primary advantage of 454 sequencing was the 400-1000 bp read length. Sanger sequencing and Ion Torrent (ironically) gets you data faster. Illumina gets you more for less money. The advent of 200-300 bp reads from the MiSeq along with the >8000 bp reads from PacBio essentially killed the technology.
